Southend United settle tax bill to avoid HMRC winding-up order

• Club pays outstanding debt to the revenue
• Wednesday's winding-up order will not now proceed

Southend United have confirmed they will not be wound up tomorrow when they return to the high court. The League One club were given a further seven days to pay their £378,487.36 debt to Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs after their case was adjourned until Wednesday.

However, the Shrimpers have revealed that the outstanding tax bill was settled last week but "as a formality the case still has to go before the court to be dismissed".

This is the fourth time in the past six months that the club has successfully avoided a winding-up order. The chairman, Ron Martin, told the Southend Echo that he felt their financial troubles were now behind the League One club.

"I'm really positive about the future of the club," Martin said. "When people look back on this in the future they will say this is just a blip. The world has been in financial turmoil and I'm not immune to it."
